Kate Jones

Chauncey, the friendly and free-spirited feline that showed up on our porch a little over a year ago, loves exploring his self-proclaimed territory. My husband put an AirTag on his collar to track his whereabouts, and Chauncey does trot home when he's called. He's just not a homebody kind of cat.

When we're away on vacation, Aunt Debbie takes care of him. In this episode, I share some of his antics in Chauncey's "own" words. Hope you enjoy hearing about them, and please check the chapter markers for pictures and captions.

This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to The Gale Hill Radio Hour!

The show is available in Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify and other podcast directories. Also on Substack and YouTube; Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Hello and welcome to a short episode of The Gale Hill Radio Hour. I'm your host Kate Jones, here with a Chauncey update.

As you may recall from episode 49, Chauncey is the cat that showed up on our front porch a little over a year ago. He’s a character who likes to roam what he thinks is his territory, visiting the neighbors and going inside if they let him. Thankfully, we’re able to track his whereabouts with an AirTag and, when he’s within earshot, he always comes home when he's called.

My husband and I deeply appreciate that. We’ve become quite fond of Chauncey, but there’s no way he'll stay inside all the time with us. He’s quite vocal about that.

We’re also sincerely grateful for our animal-loving friend Debbie, who takes care of Chauncey when we’re on vacation. In September, when we were in Wyoming visiting family, Debbie kept us informed with regular messages from Chauncey. Here’s a sampling:

Hi, Mom and Dad, I’m doing fine. Aunt Deb told me I could have a sleepover on Saturday with my friends. No girls! Going upstairs now to sleep. Love you both.

Dear Mom and Dad, I’m going in to get brushed, relax and eat a big dinner, then to bed. I’ve been cruising the neighborhood all day. It’s been gorgeous here. I love getting brushed and talked to like a kitten. Aunt Debbie doesn’t know I’m a big boy, but that’s okay. Miss you.

Hi, Mom and Dad, I’m doing great. Aunt Deb carries me around a lot. I get brushed all the time. Hint, hint! I caught her a fat chipmunk yesterday, but she told me I had to leave it outside. Miss and love you. Be safe.

That’s enough to give you a pretty good snapshot of Chauncey’s personality. He’s not a shy, retiring sort, is he? That's okay, he's a keeper.
