Sockwell for Happy Sheep (and Feet)
This is Kate Jones, here to talk about a brand of socks with style and function.
Recently, I came across Sockwell's Essential Comfort line at Dave’s Boot Shop in Petoskey, Michigan. The key component of these socks is merino wool that comes from free-grazing sheep raised in the U.S. In other words, as the packaging notes, the wool comes from "happy sheep."
I bought a pair of non-cushion socks with an attractive “Big Bloom” flower design, which lives up to the company’s stated intent to bring “fresh modern styling to every sock we make.” The socks are super comfortable too.
Visit sockwellusa.com to find out about all the Sockwell lines and also the company's commitment to wellness, sustainability and ethically raised sheep .
If you’re going to Petoskey and want to check out Dave’s Boot Shop, you can find the address and phone number by visiting the store hours page on the website. Sockwell socks weren't on Dave's site when I visited it, but the store doesn't list its entire inventory online.
This is the third in an occasional series that I call GHR Recommends. It's a service of The Gale Hill Radio Hour. The first episode in the series is Ep 62 about my favorite granola; the second is Ep 69 about a stylish and beautifully made robe. As always, no payment or goods are exchanged for these recommendations.
This is Kate Jones. Thank you for listening to The Gale Hill Radio Hour!
The show is available in Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify and other podcast directories. Also on Substack and YouTube; Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
Hello, this is Kate Jones welcoming you to another in the occasional series GHR Recommends.
The idea of this series is to highlight something that’s exceptional in one way or another. No money or goods are ever exchanged for these recommendations. It’s just information shared that may be worth your while.
Today’s recommendation is for a brand of socks whose trademark registration is Feel Better in Style™.
First, a little background. Every year, my husband and I drive north to visit with friends in Petoskey, Michigan. Whenever we’re in the area, we make a point of stopping by Dave’s Boot Shop to browse the downtown store’s large inventory of socks, shoes and boots.
This year, I was on a personal mission to find thin socks that would be warm enough for walks in cooler weather but not as thick as the Smartwool™ ones I wear during the coldest months.
I found a pair at Dave’s, and now I know I can order more of them online without waiting for that once-a-year trip to Petoskey.
The socks I purchased are from the Essential Comfort line by Sockwell, the aforementioned Feel Better in Style™ company. Made from a blend of merino wool, they come with a “Soft Top Promise,” meaning that the tops don’t bind like some other socks.
Sockwell also makes compression and relaxed-fit socks, and socks designed for people with diabetes, bunions or plantar fasciitis.
I haven’t tried any of those, though I can tell you that my socks are comfortable and sport an attractive “Big Bloom” flower design. In fact, they live up to the company’s stated mission to bring “fresh modern styling to every sock we make.”
That statement is on the cardboard packaging, along with other good things to read. The full mission statement — three versions of it, in English, French and German — can be found there under the headline “We Stand for Wellness.” Along with style, the text covers comfort and therapeutic solutions for foot problems.
Elsewhere on the package, there’s a line about “Happy Sheep,” noting that the merino wool comes from free-grazing sheep raised in the U.S.
My favorite of all is the quote attributed to Leonardo da Vinci that reads: “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art.”
How inspiring. Makes one want to take good care of our masterpieces! And I think that Sockwell socks may be one comfortable and even stylish way to do that.
Thank you for listening to this short episode of The Gale Hill Radio Hour. Please share it with anyone who might appreciate socks made with a commitment to wellness, sustainability and happy sheep.
